Good morning, everyone! I hope that you are having a great week so far, and that you are continuing to remain healthy!
For the past several weeks, I’ve been having migraine headaches on an almost daily basis, which has definitely been a cause for concern for my family. Last week I had an MRI of my brain to rule out the possibility of a brain tumor, and I am very relieved to report that the results of the scan came back normal.
As of right now, we still do not know what is causing these headaches, so I’m going to be seeing a neurologist as soon as possible. Hopefully they will be able to help me get to the bottom of things.
This week for the POPSUGAR Reading Challenge, I decided to read The Sound of Stars, by Alechia Dow.
The Sound of Stars takes place on Earth in the aftermath of an invasion by aliens known as the Ilori. The story follows two characters, a human teenager named Janelle Baker, and a “labmade” Ilori called M0Rr1S.
Janelle lives in a facility for humans in New York City, under the Ilori’s strict guidelines. All art, music, and literature are now illegal…and if the Ilori ever learned that Janelle operates a secret lending library out of her family’s basement storage room, she’d be put to death.
Her secret is soon discovered by M0Rr1S, who can’t bring himself to have her executed. He not only promises to keep her secret, but also offers to keep her and her parents safe. He also reveals that he has developed a passion for Earth’s music, something which could result in his demise at the hands of his own people.
When one of her neighbors sells her out, Janelle is sentenced to death for owning illegal items. M0Rr1S manages to save her, but the pair is forced to go on the run.
As Janelle and M0Rr1S travel across the country, they share the music and stories they’ve managed to save. The question is, will the two friends manage to elude the Ilori, or will they be caught?
I thoroughly enjoyed reading The Sound of Stars! It was a beautifully written book that I found both relevant and relatable. Janelle and M0Rr1S are both wonderful characters, and their story is incredibly hard to put down.
One of the things I enjoyed most about the novel was the fact that Dow frequently references well-known books and music. Many of Janelle’s favorite books are ones that I have read and enjoyed myself, and I found myself humming many of the pop songs that were referenced at the beginning of the M0Rr1S-centric chapters.
The Sound of Stars is Dow’s debut novel, and I have to say that I am really looking forward to reading more of her work in the future. Her next book, The Kindred, is scheduled to be released on January 4, 2022. She also has an upcoming middle grade book called An Enchanted Match, which should be published in the winter of 2023. If you’d like to learn more about Alechia Dow and her writing, I highly recommend checking out her website.
Next week’s POPSUGAR Reading Challenge update will be posted on Saturday, September 25th. In the meantime, I hope you’ll join me here on The Unapologetic Bookworm next week for an upcoming readathon announcement (on September 20th) and my review of Fantasy Mapping: Drawing Worlds, by Wesley Jones (on the 22nd).
Have a fantastic weekend!
