I don’t know about you, but I really enjoy a good collection of comics. When I was a kid, I always enjoyed the comics that you would find in the newspaper, such as Garfield, Foxtrot, and Calvin and Hobbes. While I still enjoy those titles, over the past several years, I’ve really found myself gravitating toward the works of online comic artists. You can find links to reviews of some of my favorite comics here.
One of the comics I’ve really enjoyed recently is Foxes in Love.
Foxes in Love, by Toivo Kaartinen, is a collection of short, standalone comics about Green and Blue, two foxes who are very much in love. Some of the comics in this collection focus on their thoughts about love, and about being in a relationship, while others focus on things such as: daily activities, dinner decisions, doomsday prepping, and their personal hopes and fears.
Even though I was already familiar with the majority of the comics in this collection (having seen them on Pinterest and Twitter), I really enjoyed reading the first volume of Foxes in Love. It’s a very sweet book that made me smile and laugh in a time when I was having a really hard time being positive.
The artwork of Foxes in Love is simple and straightforward. Kaartinen primarily focuses on the foxes themselves, so there really isn’t a need for complex illustrations or backgrounds. I think this approach works really well, because it allows the reader to focus on the most important element…Green and Blue’s relationship.
Green and Blue themselves are absolutely adorable, both in terms of personality and with respect to their character designs. The comics are in full color, but even if they weren’t, you could still tell which fox is which based on their personalities (something I discovered recently on Twitter when the artist posted an uncolored comic).
If you’ve seen and enjoyed Kaartinen’s comics on social media platforms such as Instagram, Twitter, and/or Tumblr, then I definitely recommend supporting his work by getting a copy of Foxes in Love, Vol. 1. Personally, I’m already looking forward to reading the second volume when it is released. If you have the opportunity to read this collection for yourself, I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!
