The Tough Guide to Fantasyland

As I mentioned in Wednesday’s post, this has been a great week for reading! I’ve spent most of the week with my nose buried in a book, and I’ve been loving every minute of it! One of the titles I had the opportunity to read this week was The Tough Guide to Fantasyland, by Diana Wynne Jones.

The Tough Guide to Fantasyland is a travel guide based on the premise that all fantasy stories take place in the same country, which is known as Fantasyland, and which can be visited by readers/tourists. The book discusses the essential fantasy elements, places, people, and things that you (as a tourist) are likely to encounter on your journey through Fantasyland. The guide is presented as a series of alphabetized encyclopedia entries that covers everything from those who are magically ADEPT, to ZOMBIES.

I really enjoyed reading The Tough Guide to Fantasy. Not only is the book a solid guide to fantasy terminology, as well as common genre motifs and clichés, but it is also very entertaining. There were several times that I found myself laughing as I read, either because I came across something I recognized from one of my favorite fantasy novels, or because of the way in which an entry was presented.

If you are a fan of fantasy novels, or are considering writing your own fantasy, I would definitely recommend checking out The Tough Guide to Fantasyland. It was a fun read, and would be a fantastic resource for aspiring authors!

If you have the opportunity to read this book, I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Happy Friday!
