The Home Library Project, Part Three: The Work Continues

Good afternoon, everyone! The home library reorganization project continues! I spent most of the day working in my library/office space, and was able to make some significant progress.

This morning, I began by emptying the rest of my shelves and deep cleaning all of the bookcases in my office. There are eleven bookcases in the office (only nine of which are shown here), so it was quite a job.

While this part of today’s work went fairly quickly, it was very hard on me physically. Moving all of the books was very physically demanding, and left me feeling completely exhausted. Fortunately, the afternoon was a bit more sedate, and didn’t require as much lifting and bending.

Just in case you’re wondering, the bottom shelf on the left hand side contains my yearbooks from various schools I attended, as well as the school at which I taught. I have elected to black out the titles on this shelf to protect my privacy, as well as the privacy of my former students.

After completing my shelf clearing and cleaning, I spent a little bit of time thinking about how I want to organize my books. Knowing that I need to be a little more flexible with my organization, I’ve decided to divide my books into categories.

My non-fiction books will include categories such as: humor, autobiographies/biographies, self-help and medical texts, and history. All of my fiction books, on the other hand, will be divided into genres, including: romance, Sci-Fi, fantasy, horror, mystery/thriller, etc.

Once I had these categories identified, I began sorting my books, beginning with my non-fiction titles. I ultimately decided to start with non-fiction because I do have fewer of these books, and don’t add to them very frequently.

I was able to go ahead and get those books sorted and placed on their new shelves before I stopped for the day. I was also able to organize my comics, as well as a small number of fiction titles.

I’m very pleased with the way these shelves have turned out so far, and I’m looking forward to continuing my work on the fiction section tomorrow.

Since tomorrow is Saturday, I will be taking a short break from writing about my reorganization project. The next project update will be posted on Sunday, August 30th, most likely in the afternoon or evening. In the meantime, I hope you’ll join me here tomorrow for a POPSUGAR Reading Challenge update.
